Denmark – Public Consultation on Peppol BIS 4 Transition
Denmark is entering a pivotal phase in its digital transformation. The Danish Business Authority (Erhvervsstyrelsen) has officially opened a public consultation on a new document strategy that will see the country move away from its long-standing national e-invoicing format OIOUBL, in favor of the international Peppol BIS standard.
The Strategy:
Following a year-long analysis, the Danish government has decided to cancel the previously planned OIOUBL 3.0 update. Instead, the focus has shifted to creating a single, unified standard—Nemhandel BIS 4—which is a localised adaptation of the international Peppol BIS 4.0 format.
Key pillars of the new strategy include:
– Alignment with the European Norm EN 16931 to facilitate smoother cross-border trade.
– Proactive preparation for the EU’s VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) initiative.
– Reduced Complexity by moving to a single standard to lower operational costs and technical debt for businesses that previously had to support dual formats.
Stakeholder Engagement
The Danish Business Authority is actively seeking input from service providers, businesses, and technical experts. The consultation period is brief and ends on 27th March 2026. Stakeholders can submit comments and questions directly to the Nemhandel team.
This shift signals Denmark’s commitment to a more integrated European digital market, ensuring that Danish businesses are ready for the mandatory e-invoicing requirements expected to hit the broader EU by 2030.
