Denmark – VAT on books

Denmark is reintroducing legislation to eliminate its 25% VAT on books. Currently, the VAT rate on books in Denmark is one of the highest in the world, which makes literature expensive for everyday buyers. By moving to a 0% VAT rate, the government hopes to make books cheaper and reverse downward trend on reading.

Denmark first attempted to cut the book tax as part of the 2026 Finance Act, but the plan was delayed by a sudden election. Now, the re-launched tax legislation aims to make printed books, e-books, and audiobooks completely tax-free. If approved by parliament, the change will take effect in 2027.
