VAT Determination vs. E-invoicing
Why when it comes to e-invoicing getting VAT determination right first time matters ?
With e-invoicing, VAT determination becomes a critical upstream control.
In the traditional invoicing world, there may be opportunities to identify and correct a VAT errors further downstream, perhaps during invoice review, reconciliation, or the VAT return process.
With e-invoicing, that becomes much more difficult and as we move towards a VAT in the Digital Age (VIDA), framework, the consequences of getting that initial VAT determination wrong becomes even more significant.
If the wrong VAT code is determined in the system, that one incorrect decision can flow through the entire process.
It could result in:
- the wrong VAT amount on the e-invoice;
- the wrong VAT treatment or amount in the ledger;
- an incorrect VAT return or digital reporting submission;
- and potentially an incorrect VAT payment or VAT deduction.
So, in a highly automated environment, the key point is this:
E-invoicing doesn’t correct a wrong VAT determination — it can simply make the wrong answer travel faster, more consistently, and across more systems.
That is why businesses need to put significant emphasis on the quality of their VAT master data and their VAT determination logic.
The objective should be to ensure that, when a transaction is created in SAP, the VAT determination logic / solution can automatically determine the correct VAT treatment and VAT code first time, every time.
Because once that determination is correct at source, the downstream processes, invoicing, accounting, reporting and ultimately tax compliance have a much stronger foundation.
So, when we think about e-invoicing, we shouldn’t just ask:
“Can our system generate and transmit an e-invoice?”
We should also be asking:
“Can our system determine the correct VAT treatment before that invoice is generated?”
That is where getting VAT determination right first time becomes absolutely critical.
