The Swiss Federal Council has proposed a temporary increase in the VAT rate to finance a military and security infrastructure.

Key Details of the Proposal

– A temporary 0.8 percentage point increase in the standard VAT rate, raising it from 8.1% to 8.9%,

– The increase is intended to last for 10 years, beginning on 1st January 2028,

The proposal requires parliamentary approval and a national referendum, with a vote expected in summer 2027.
